Virgin of Candelaria - Pilgrimage 2015

The pilgrimage to the Virgin of Candelaria takes place every year during the night of August 14th to August 15th in Tenerife. It is a religous march that goes from many parts of the island until the municipality of Candelaria. Attended by thousands of people from all the islands and outside them to celebrate the feast of the patron in the popularly called Walk to Candelaria. That night the Basilica stays open.

There are several routes depending on the city and the municipality of the pilgrims, the most important are:

 

Santa Cruz de Tenerife- Candelaria: The route is 20 kilometers.
San Cristóbal de La Laguna- Candelaria: The route is 20 kilometers.
La Victoria- Candelaria: The route is 30 kilometers.
La Matanza- Candelaria: The route is 30 kilometers.
El Sauzal- Candelaria: The route is 30 kilometers.
Tegueste- Candelaria: The route is 25 kilometers.
Tacoronte- Candelaria: The route is 22 kilometers.
El Rosario- Candelaria: The route is 15 kilometers.

El Camino Viejo de Candelaria (The Old Walk Way of Candelaria) corresponds in some parts to the old road which connected The Old City of La Laguna to Candelaria, it has a wealth of history and culture.

The day of the celebration of the Virgin of Candelaria is on February the 2nd, which has continued since the conquerors in 1496. August the 15th it is in honor of the aborigines of Tenerife, called Guanches, who used to go on a pilgrimage during the August Moon to the current Cave of San Blas where the Virgin Chaxiraxi (name given by the aborigines to the Virgin of Candelaria) was installed , to dedicate the local harvest to the Virgin.
