Fiesta de la Rama in honor of the “Virgen de las Nieves”

Fiesta de la Rama

Like every year on August 4th the Fiesta de la Rama (Rama = branch) takes place in the small community Agaete in the north of Gran Canaria. Every year the community thinks of the Virgen de las Nieves (Virgin of the snow).

It is a celebration of tradition. This tradition includes a dance of thousands of people who move through the streets of the village and wing branches in the air until they reach the chapel of the Virgin. You can also see some people as they hit the ocean with the branches. A rite of natives tells that in the past the Canarians prayed like that to God for rain. The festival ends with an offering of the branches to the Virgin. On the next day, the celebration continues with a pilgrimage of the Virgin of Snows. She is brought into a different chapel where she will remain for a few weeks and then come back to her chapel.

The Fiesta de la Rama in Agaete is one of the most important events on the island of Gran Canaria and the festival of the small community. Do not miss this traditional and cultural event and come to Gran Canaria.
